Register of Guides

The Register of Guides is the only official record of Institute of Tourist Guiding accredited and regulated tourist guides in England, Northern Ireland and Jersey.

All those who hold Institute qualifications undergo a rigorous qualification process to ensure they possess the necessary knowledge, guiding skills and language proficiency. Guides admitted to the Register of Guides are regulated by the Institute and must adhere to the Professional Code of Conduct.

The travel and heritage sectors and the public at large can use the Register of Guides to check qualification credentials.

Blue Badge

This qualification is awarded for guides providing walking tours or guiding from a moving vehicle in a region or metropolitan area, a town or countryside, including guided tours of sites e.g. religious buildings, art galleries and museums.

Green Badge

This qualification is awarded for guides providing walking tours in a town, countryside or defined area, including guided tours of town attractions, e.g. religious buildings, museum and sites.

White Badge

This qualification is awarded for guides providing tours around a single site, e.g. religious building, museum, zoo, art gallery, wildlife centre, historic house and garden, or a restricted single route tour, e.g. by boat, land-train.

Endorsements

This qualification is awarded to existing Blue or Green Badge guides who have taken an additional course around a site.

Driver Guide Qualifications

Some Blue Badge Tourist Guides also work as driver guides. The available selections refer to the number of passengers their vehicle is registered to accommodate.
